Parts of a Hide

A leather hide can be divided into specific sections based on its natural shape and structure. Each section has unique characteristics in terms of strength, thickness, and grain. The following formulas represent the different parts of a hide and how they relate to one another.

Parts of a Hide
Single Shoulder : a+b = a+c
Double Shoulder : a+b+c
Double Shoulder : a+b+c
Bend : d = e
Bend : d = e
Belly: f = g
Belly: f = g
Side : a+b+d+f = a+c+e+g
Back : a+b+d = a+c+e
Double Bend : d+e
Double Back : b+c+d+e+a

ForeFX Leather offers a comprehensive range of leather tempers engineered to meet specific performance and application requirements.

  • Soft : Extremely soft and pliable. It does not tend to hold it's shape. Often used for garments or
    upholstery.
  • Semi-Soft : Still very soft and pliable, but may tend to have a slight structure to it. Typically used in sneakers and handbags.
  • Semi-Stiff : Stiff, but still soft, but not rigid. Tends to hold it's shape. Typically used in boots and motorcycle bags.
  • Stiff : Has a hard and stiff feel and not easily bent or folded. Typically used for heavy duty belts, straps, or knife sheaths.
  • Rigid : Rock solid and will not bend or flex at all. Typically over 10 OZ in thickness and used for body armor and horse tack.

Full-grain leather of high quality often displays natural variations and markings like fat wrinkles, scratches, scars, and insect bites. While these cosmetic imperfections are used to grade the leather, the tanning process and resulting quality of the hide itself remain consistent across all grades.

Branding is common on economy and number 3 grade hides. Some people even prefer hides with brands for unique projects. We currently offer TR and TRBF grades online, but other grades may be available upon request.

NO: 1 (Best Quality)

Expect 1-3 defects.

NO: 2 (Good Quality)

Expect 3-5 defects and more waste than NO: 1.

NO: 3 (Standard Quality)

Expect over 5 defects including brands and natural defects.

The thickness of leather is measured in ounces. The weight can vary between sides due to natural variations in leather. Measurement typically takes place at specific locations on the hide—commonly the butt or shoulder region. The butt section generally represents the thickest portion of the hide, while the shoulder area is typically thinner (with exceptions in certain leathers like heavy harness). Some of our sides are leveled to provide a more consistent thickness.

One ounce of leather equals 0.4mm or 1/64 of an inch. Therefore, 9 ounces is equal to 3.6mm or 9/64 of an inch, and so on. Our conversion chart below provides a quick reference for various thicknesses. Please note that each piece of leather has a slightly variable thickness over the entire hide; our chart below reflects this variance.
